neurocognitive disorders

Neurocognitive disorders are disorders in cognitive function that  develop after birth / early life.  Neurocognitive disorders are generally not apparent at birth or early in life.

Cognitive disorders include:

  • Delirium (a/k/a “Acute Confusional State”) is an acutely disturbed state of mind that occurs in fever, intoxication, and other disorders and is characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence of thought and speech. Delirium develops over a brief time period, typically within a few hours to a few days.
  • Major and mild neurocognitive disorders are neural process impairments that manifest themselves through an acquired cognitive decline in memory, focus, language, learning, and perception. Cognitive disorders often arise from other medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, substance abuse, medication, sleep deprivation, or vascular disease, among others.
